Brief: Your school is hosting an awards ceremony for local community organisations. You have been asked to provide a 10-15 minute performance appropriate to the event.
Response: From the brief I can infer that the set list needs to be appropriate for mostly adults (young to middle aged). The music needs to be clean, i.e. no swearing and should appeal to a wide range of musical tastes. The time limit suggests that the set list should consist of around 4 to 5 songs of between 3 to 4 minutes each. As school is hosting the event we should probably consider wearing our uniforms.
1. Share your thoughts with the group – be honest, the more we know, the better we can support each
other. You will all need to write notes for this meeting and keep your own copy.
Due to the collection of instruments that the group can play, it would be sensible to select music from the rock, blues and jazz genres. This would result in a better performance because we would be playing music we are more comfortable with and appeals to our general tastes.
Our rehearsals will need to be structured and should run for around 45-60 minutes to give us a reasonable amount of time to become pitch perfect.
2. Decide who you will work with – make sure that you choose people who will complement your skill set (i.e. different instruments).
Name: James Hemmens Instrument: Guitar
Name: Ollie Mascall Instrument: Drums
3. Select your musical material – you should select 5 songs that you would like to do. This may be subject to change later on as you review your progress and development. Why have you chosen these songs (think about your individual goals)? Who will play each part? What support do you need?

4. Put together a rehearsal schedule for the first song. You have got 3 weeks to prepare it for
performance to the class.
a. What will a rehearsal involve? List the stages:
1. Decide on a time, place and insure we have all equipment we will require for this rehearsal.
2. Decide on which song we will be rehearsing and then divide the roles between the group.
3. Learn each of our individual roles privately.
4. Rehearse collectively whilst listening to an original recording.
5. Finally, rehearse as a group without the original recording until it sounds right.
Y11 MP: Performers – Pre-Production Meeting & Rehearsal Process NAME: Louis Smith
b. How will you provide evidence to show your progress? Written diary, videos etc.
Progress will be logged in our Year 11 rehearsal diary page on a weekly basis.
c. Make a plan for 3 rehearsal sessions. What do you want to achieve in each? When do you need
peer/tutor feedback?
Rehearsal 1: Time / Place / Equipment - Decide on set list and individual roles within the group and start to learn those individual roles.
Rehearsal 2: Time / Place / Equipment - Discuss our progress on individual rehearsals and start rehearsing collectively whilst simultaneously listening to an original recording of the chosen song.
Rehearsal 3: Time / Place / Equipment - We should by now have mastered our individual roles and start to feel confident enough to rehearse without the aid the a backing track.
d. What do you need to do individually or as a group? What do you need to be able to do on your
instrument (specific techniques for the style of music)?
Individually, we would need to ensure our instruments were in good working order and in tune. Technique wise, due to the set list being incredibly blues based, the main techniques I would need to use are slides, bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs and vibrato,
e. What resources/equipment/support do you require?
The equipment we will need are a drum kit, two amplifiers, a microphone and a microphone stand.
f. Are there any potential issues that may occur during the rehearsal process? How could you resolve
these?
Potentially, we could have some technical difficulties with equipment such as amplifiers and microphones. Therefore, it would be wise to have back up equipment.
All health and safety risks will be covered in my Health & Safety page.
