Group comment: You work very well as a group of musicians and have a LOT of potential as a band. I think your tracks have been chosen well as they have a lot of potential to showcase your individual talents - and already have in this rehearsal performance. I particularly enjoyed your version of I See Fire and think this will be a very impressive performance once it is perfected; I also really liked how your 2-part melody fitted together in Iris. You all clearly know the songs well, they just need to be polished in places and at times I think you could all push yourselves a little harder in terms of your musicianship, for example with three singers there is some real opportunity for some lovely close harmonies, which I know all of you would be able to do. In general, I would say the main aspect of your performance you need to work on is your stage presence - it was a rehearsal but more visible enthusiasm would you a long way, as would knowing the lyrics off by heart - no phones next time! Other than this, great work.
Individual feedback: Louis, your guitar playing is polished and you clearly have a natural ear for creativity in chord changes and less conventional harmonies which is brilliant. Your vocal confidence is great and your distinctive voice (in a good way!) shines through - as does your confidence on stage. However, it would be good to see more enthusiasm in your playing as it will really lift the performance. Try and showcase your guitar skills more too - don't be shy on adding in solo parts throughout your set.
Peer feedback: - Iris: I like that the guitar and drums meant that it was simple and mixed the layered vocals and made the song good. To improve, the drums could include more fills, for example to build up to the chorus. I See Fire: The tempo could be more steady, however I liked the dynamics used as there was a crescendo up to the chorus and the end which was clever. Also, the ending was clear - especially the vocals which were always in pitch.
- Every instrument was in sync and sounded really good. Louis - good movement on the guitar. Jenna/Amy - excellent vocals. Ollie - good timing.
- Iris: Good formation and combination of singers. I don't think it could be improved. I See Fire: I like the beat, but singing could be a little louder.
- Iris: It was a great piece of music, everyone took part and it was very good to listen to. Would be even better if the balance was adjusted ie. the singers were louder and the drums were quieter. I See Fire: It was really good and everyone could be heard well.
- Very good, well timed drum beat, amazing guitarist, good contrast of singers voices, really good outro - nice build up. To improve you could think about adding another instrument.
- It was a good performance however perhaps another instrument could be added. To improve: Ollie - put a fill in and mix the beat up a bit. Amy/Jenna - could sing louder. Louis - all good.
- Great performance, singing was clear.
- Iris: Ollie is keeping a steady beat, the group has a nice sound and were all in tune. I See Fire: All I have to say is Wow! This is awesome. Love the harmony.
- Iris: Timing was excellent and the group stayed in time throughout. Good execution of technique with no mistakes. Louis played guitar very well and vocals were great also. Drums were good but a little variation would be better. I See Fire: Guitar worked well with the more complex drum pattern. Singers needed to work a tiny bit more on the tone modulation as sometimes the tone fluctuated a bit too much.
- Iris: Good/fantastic singing. The guitar was incredible. The drum beat could fit in a bit better. I See Fire: What an emotional piece, very good. The guitar was very good, drums beat could also fit in a little better.
Louis, it is clear to see that this group has much potential.
Peer comments: 1- the group needs to be more enthusiastic 2- more confidence needed 3- sing louder 4- learn all the lyrics for memory to help with the performance
Teacher comments: As a group how often do you rehearse? Are you all on the same page with the vision of how each song is going to be performed? These questions are crucial to your group. Are you able to find a way to create a group which need each other and not solely rely on one or two individuals?
Think about this carefully. Also think about what you as a listener would like to hear and see in a group.
We can start to have a weekly rehearsal now. The only reason we haven't before is that i've been tied up with house music rehearsals. And I am trying to find my old drumming brushes for Ollie so that he can drum more in the softer songs.
